An online petition is calling for the government to enforce mandatory data sharing by holiday short-let companies and for all UK councils to reduce the number of ordinary homes being converted into Airbnbs.
Activists believe that the conversion of ordinary homes into Airbnbs have led to community displacement as research has demonstrated that 1 in 50 homes in London are converted into holiday lets. As a result, many families are forced out of their homes and facing higher rents. Concerns have also been expressed about the rise in anti-social behaviour such as noise, waste, and alcohol misuse in local communities.
The online petition is calling for reforms, a licensing system and a ‘right to refuse’ new listings.
Activists are hoping that the English government will act on this matter and follow the example of both the Scottish and Welsh governments, who have introduced measures that allow councils to ban the conversion of residential houses into short-term lets.
