Protect your property from the dangers of icy conditions

In the past week, there has been some snow and colder conditions throughout the UK. Snow and ice can be dangerous and therefore, you should be aware of ways to protect your property from any damage that such conditions may cause.

Salt and grit:

One way to protect your property from the dangers of icy conditions is to choose the correct proportion of grit and salt. If there is an insufficient amount of salt, then it will not effectively prevent ice and may result in dangerous black ice. 10-15 grams of salt per square metre of ground is recommended to prevent ice, but it should be increased to 20-40 grams if snow is forecast. Make sure to pay attention to areas which may cause more injury in icy conditions such as stairs and you could also put up a sign to protect others nearby.

Spray antifreeze on locks:

Another issue is that icy conditions may freeze locks and potentially trap people inside or out of their homes. To deal with this, you can spray antifreeze on your locks.

Perform checks on areas in your house that may be susceptible to damage in cold weather:

You should ensure that you check whether there are any cracks in boilers because boilers are used the most during cold weather. Find a reliable contractor who is nearby and would be able to deal with urgent repairs. It is important that your contractor is close to your property because snow and icy conditions may delay repairs or prevent contractors from reaching your home.
