This blog will outline some of Labour’s plans for the private rented sector if Labour were to win the next general election.
Labour’s new renters’ charter:
Labour plans to publish a white paper to begin a rental reform with a new renters’ charter which they mentioned in September 2022. This aims to stabilise rent increases with industry groups. The charters’ proposals would then be put to a vote within 100 days of winning a general election.
Labour’s renters’ charter plans to do the following:
Labour will focus on social housing and homeownership:
Labour promises to provide greater support for social housing and aims ‘to restore social housing to the second largest form of tenure.’
The Labour Party will also focus on supporting people in getting onto the property ladder by introducing new reforms and a new mortgage guarantee scheme, for first-time buyers.
Support for rent control or a rent freeze:
Labour has also introduced rent controls which the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has also supported. Labour also plans to give local councils more power to implement rent controls or rent freeze within their local areas.
