Garden: tips for watering your plants

There are many factors you should consider when watering your plants. To water plants properly, you should consider the plant size, type of soil, weather, sun exposure and season. These factors will help you determine how much water is required for that plant. You should also consider doing the following:

  • Water your plants in the morning: Watering plants in the morning is best as the water will be absorbed and eventually will dry in the cooler hours of the day. If you water your plants later in the day, it may lead you to boil the roots, sunburn the leaves or grow mold spores and rot.
  • Add a coarse material at the bottom of your plant pot: If there is too much water near the roots, this can cause stagnant water and root rot. You can prevent this from happening by adding a coarser material at the bottom of the plant pot.
  • Optimise your soil: Loosening the soil and adding organic matter can affect the absorption of water.

Ensure that you avoid doing the following:

  • Avoid overwatering your plants: Too much water is not good for your plants. The amount of water a plant needs depends on the type of plant it is.
  • Avoid using a sprinkler: Since plants absorb most of their water through the soil, sprinklers are unnecessary.
  • Avoid relying on rain: There may be some days where there isn’t enough rainfall to keep your plants alive.
